Why PT?
Growing up I played multiple sports which led to many injuries. I had to have physical therapy throughout my childhood, but I loved my therapist. Being able to help others return to their sport or activities they were unable to perform while injured is very rewarding.

Laura Akers PT, DPT, Cert. DN

Hometown: Mount Pleasant, TX

Position: Physical Therapist

PT School: Hardin-Simmons University (DPT)

UnderGrad: Hardin-Simmons University (B.B.S. – Exercise Science)

Certifications: Certified in Dry Needling

Interests/Hobbies: Working out, Traveling, Baking, Hanging out with my husband (Jared) and dog (Oliver)

Why PT?
I decided to become a PT because this allows me to be knowledgeable and continue learning about the human body and how it works, which has always been intriguing to me. It also allows me to be a teacher and a coach in a way, which are two things I wanted to be for most of my life. You may ask how can you be a teacher and coach by being a PT? Daily, I get to teachmy patients things they need to know and do in order to be successful with their rehab and in order to prevent re-injury in the future. I get to be a coach by encouraging and pushing my patients each time I meet with them to do their best and achieve their goals. The biggest reward I get from being a PT is seeing my patient’s return to activities they haven’t done in weeks, months, or even years. One of my biggest prayers and desires in life is to make a difference and/or bring a little light and joy to each person I encounter and this profession provides me that ten fold.

I grew up playing all sports, but my passion was for baseball. In high school, I spent more time in the training room than on the field due to various injuries. At that time, I knew I wanted to be in the rehab field so I would continue to be close to sports. I have always felt called to help others as well. This is a perfect setting to be able to offer encouragement to others and help them re-gain their function so they are able to get back to life.
